A product's visible ongoing charge may not describe the full economic chain through which an investment reaches you. Distribution deserves attention alongside the fund itself.

01

Read the denominator

ESMA's report published on 6 November 2025 found distribution costs accounted for 48% of total costs for UCITS in its analysis. This is a share of costs, not a charge of 48% of an investor's capital.

02

Keep an aggregate finding in perspective

The figure does not say every individual UCITS has the same distribution-cost share. Costs and channels differ. The research highlights the importance of distribution in the overall cost chain.

03

Review the documents together

Use the product cost disclosure, the platform or adviser schedule and your account's cost statement. Identify product, platform, advice, entry, trading and currency charges. Some distribution payments are embedded in other charges, so do not automatically add every label as a separate cost.

04

Ask what the cost buys

A service can have value. The useful question is whether its price, scope and recurring effect are clear, and whether the same investment task is available through a suitable lower-cost route.
